In a mass exodus, more than two million mobile phone SIM card holders have left Dhaka over the weekend, converging on their village homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with loved ones. Confirmation of this migration comes from sources within mobile phone operator companies.
Simultaneously, Dhaka witnessed an influx of over 950,000 SIM card holders from various districts, according to these sources.
The count of SIM card holders leaving the capital serves as an approximation, as it includes individuals accompanied by non-mobile phone users such as children and the elderly.
Departures began as early as Thursday, the last working day before the government holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr, with subsequent mass movements spurred by Friday and Saturday’s weekly holidays and Sunday’s holiday for Shab-e-Qadr.
This annual migration, a quintessential aspect of Eid celebrations, saw over 10 million people leaving Dhaka in the five days leading up to Eid-ul-Fitr last year.
