A devastating nor’wester wreaked havoc across Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, and Bhola on Sunday, resulting in a tragic loss of eight lives in separate incidents.
This season’s inaugural nor’wester struck the southern region on Sunday morning, leaving a trail of destruction with four fatalities, 20 injuries, and extensive property damage.
In Patuakhali’s Bauphal upazila and Pirojpur Sadar upazila, the nor’wester claimed two lives each. Furthermore, seven to eight individuals sustained injuries in Bauphal and 12 to 13 in Pirojpur Sadar upazila due to the violent storm.
Among the victims were Ratul, a 14-year-old teenager, and 75-year-old Sufia Begum. Ratul tragically succumbed to a fatal heart attack triggered by the thunderous sound of lightning, as confirmed by Dr. Marjan Sultana of Bauphal Health Complex.
The nor’wester’s fury also claimed the life of 23-year-old Ruby Begum in Pirojpur, crushed under a fallen tree, while her six-year-old daughter, Mehjabin, sustained critical injuries.
In Jhalokathi, lightning strikes during the storm proved fatal for two women and a girl in separate incidents, as they tended to their cattle.
Tragedy struck Bhola as well, with a 68-year-old beggar named Hares Ahmed losing his life when the shelter he sought collapsed during the storm in Badarpur area of Lalmohan upazila.
Amidst the grim aftermath, authorities are mobilizing efforts to assess the extent of damage and provide assistance to affected communities. Lalmohan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Touhidul Islam confirmed the unfortunate incident in Bhola.
