After a hiatus of 43 years, Bogra is poised for a groundbreaking development as the government finalizes plans to establish a cutting-edge steel mill, a landmark venture worth Tk1,800 crore. This monumental project signifies a pivotal leap forward for the northern region, long overdue for industrial transformation.
The Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) has diligently conducted feasibility studies, paving the way for Dhaka Steel Works Limited to commence operations on a sprawling 15-acre plot in the Chhoypukuria area of Bogra Sadar. The initiative awaits environmental clearance, underscoring its commitment to sustainable practices.
Excitement ripples through Bogra and its adjacent 15 districts, as locals anticipate the transformative impact of this monumental endeavor. A recent stakeholders’ meeting convened in Bogra witnessed enthusiastic participation, signifying widespread support for the initiative.
At the gathering, graced by esteemed dignitaries including BSEC Director (Finance) Badrun Nahar and chaired by Ahsan Habib, Rajshahi divisional director of the Department of Environment, the project’s significance was underscored. Special guests, including Bogra Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Abu Sufian Shafiq and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Feroza Parveen, echoed sentiments of optimism.
Badrun Nahar expressed confidence in the project’s viability, emphasizing its adherence to stringent environmental standards. She affirmed, “The envisioned steel mill prioritizes environmental sustainability, mitigating potential impacts such as noise, air, and water pollution.”
With a projected investment of Tk1,800 crore, the steel mill holds immense promise, poised to catalyze job creation and foster ancillary industries, propelling economic growth across the region.
Origins of the Initiative:
The genesis of this transformative endeavor dates back to 1964 when an industrial estate was established in Fulbari, Bogra. Over time, burgeoning demand necessitated expansion, leading to the acquisition of additional land in 1980.
Subsequently, recognizing the strategic importance of bolstering industrial infrastructure, a heavy industrial estate was earmarked in Chhoypukuria alongside the Bogra-Naogaon Highway. Despite initial groundwork laid in 1981, progress remained stagnant, with the land utilized for agricultural purposes.
In recent years, concerted efforts by BSEC culminated in the proposal to establish a steel mill, heralding a new chapter of industrial resurgence in Bogra.
The envisioned steel mill not only symbolizes progress but also embodies the collective aspirations for a prosperous and sustainable future. With momentum building, Bogra stands on the cusp of a transformative journey toward economic revitalization and regional empowerment.
