In response to escalating security threats following multiple robberies within a span of 24 hours, Sonali Bank authorities have taken the decision to suspend operations in several upazilas of Bandarban, including Thanchi, Ruma, Rowangchhari, Alikadam, Lama, and Naikhongchhari.
The Bandarban Sadar branch, however, remains operational, as confirmed by Sonali Bank Chittagong North Divisional Office General Manager, Md Mosa Khan.
The recent incidents include an attack by gunmen on Sonali Bank and Krishi Bank in Thanchi upazila, resulting in a hefty looting of Tk15,00,000 and Tk2,45,000 respectively, around 12:30 pm on Wednesday.
Prior to this, assailants had targeted the Sonali Bank vault in Ruma upazila, breaking in around 8:30 pm on Tuesday and making away with approximately Tk2 crore.
These security breaches have prompted Sonali Bank authorities to take precautionary measures, ensuring the safety of both staff and assets amidst the prevailing risks.
