Shamima Akter, recipient of a kidney from brain-dead donor Sarah Islam, breathed her last at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Tuesday night, marking the demise of both of Sarah’s kidney recipients.
Sarah Islam, a 20-year-old donor, battled various health issues, including a brain tumor. As her condition deteriorated to brain death, her mother consented to transplant Sarah’s kidneys and corneas.
Following the transplant, which occurred on January 18, 2023, Sarah’s kidneys and corneas found new homes in four recipients, including Shamima Akter and Hasina Akhtar. While both kidney recipients initially showed signs of recovery, tragedy struck as Hasina Akhtar passed away eight months post-transplant, followed by Shamima’s demise a year after the surgery.
This marks a significant milestone in organ transplantation within the country, as previously, no such procedures were performed from deceased donors.
