The state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is set to introduce Indian onions for sale at Tk40 per kg from Tuesday, following an announcement by State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu on Monday.
With an initial consignment of 1,650 tons already arrived in the country, the TCB will distribute onions in Dhaka, Chittagong, and Gazipur at the stated price.
According to Commerce Ministry Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, this shipment is part of a larger agreement for 50,000 tons of onion from India. While India has temporarily suspended onion exports, they agreed to fulfill Bangladesh’s request. The next consignment’s timing will depend on quality assessments due to the perishable nature of onions.
The initiative aims to alleviate onion prices, with hopes that the price will drop to Tk40/kg in around 30 out of 64 districts.
Distribution will occur across various spots in Dhaka, Chittagong, and Gazipur, with each truck carrying 10 tons of onions for sale.
