In a significant development, a Dhaka court has ordered a three-day remand for four individuals accused of gang-raping a young woman who endured 25 days of captivity in a Mohammadpur house, Dhaka.
Following a hearing presided over by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim, the court issued the remand order and instructed the investigating officer to ensure inclusion of all involved parties in the charge sheet.
The accused individuals, identified as Saan, Himel, Rocky, and Salma alias Jhumur, were presented before the court by Mohammadpur police station Sub-Inspector Farukul Islam, who also serves as the case investigation officer. While seeking a seven-day remand, the defence attorneys sought bail, contending against the remand. The prosecution, however, opposed bail and advocated for the remand.
During the proceedings, the defence asserted that Saan was unaware of the incident, citing a prior romantic relationship between the complainant and the accused, insinuating that the case stemmed from unfulfilled marital expectations.
Addressing the investigating officer, the judge emphasized the importance of naming all involved individuals in the charge sheet, irrespective of their influence or stature.
Following deliberations, the court granted a three-day remand for each accused.
The case revolves around the harrowing ordeal of a young woman who endured 25 days of captivity, enduring rape and video recording of the assaults while confined in a house in Nobinagar Housing, Mohammadpur, Dhaka. The victim, following her rescue by the police prompted by a concerned citizen’s call to the national emergency service number 999, filed a case at Mohammadpur Police Station on Sunday night.
