The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has proposed a reduction of 3 paisa per kilometer in bus fares, citing a decline in diesel prices.
However, bus owners have contested the recommendation, citing that they have already sold a significant portion of tickets. They argue that despite the drop in diesel costs, other operational expenses have surged.
Pushing for a reconsideration post-Eid, bus owners emphasize the need for fare adjustments to encompass all expenses, not just fuel prices.
The demand was raised during a meeting convened at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority building’s conference room on Monday, chaired by BRTA Chairman Nur Mohammad.
Under the proposed adjustments, intercity bus fares would decrease from Tk 2.15 to Tk 2.12 per kilometer, while city bus fares would reduce from Tk 2.45 to Tk 2.42 per kilometer.
Mashiur Rahman Ranga, President of the Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association, highlighted the complexity of fare determination, stressing that fuel prices alone do not account for all expenses. He pointed out additional costs incurred by various components of buses and the impact of prolonged traffic congestion on fuel consumption.
However, Advocate Humayun Kabir, General Secretary of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh, advocated for a 5 paisa reduction, asserting that a 3 paisa adjustment would yield minimal impact.
