Dealers in Dhaka and Chittagong are receiving the initial consignment of Indian onions, totaling 1,650 tons, which arrived in the country on Sunday night.
Gholam Khorshed, Additional Director of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), disclosed that the onions, transported on 42 wagons, reached Sirajganj Bazar rail yard by 6 am on Monday, with unloading commencing at 9 am.
Out of this initial shipment, 1,000 tons of onions are allocated to 100 dealers in Dhaka district, while the remaining 650 tons will be distributed to Gazipur and Chittagong.
The decision to import onions from India was prompted by escalating prices in the local market, as confirmed by Gholam Khorshed.
Under the open market sale (OMS) initiative of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, each kilogram of onion will be available for purchase at Tk40 in Dhaka and Chittagong within one day.
