The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has stirred controversy by freezing bank accounts of private universities, jeopardizing the salaries of hundreds of teachers and employees just before Eid-ul-Fitr.
The move follows a recent order from the Appellate Division imposing a 15% tax on private universities in Bangladesh, leaving affected universities in limbo awaiting the full verdict.
Assistant Commissioner of Taxes (Circle-3) office has initiated the suspension of accounts for eight private universities, citing non-payment of the mandated tax. This abrupt action has sparked concerns among university authorities and employees alike, fearing delays in salary disbursement.
In response, university officials express dismay at the lack of communication and timing surrounding the account freezes. They question the feasibility of settling dues without access to the full judgment and urge for reconsideration of the decision.
Meanwhile, the Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB) has appealed for the immediate unfreezing of accounts, emphasizing the adverse impact on university operations and adherence to legal provisions governing university funds.
The situation remains tense as authorities deliberate on a resolution, leaving the fate of university salaries uncertain ahead of the festive season.
