In the bustling kitchen markets of the capital, Dhaka, on Friday, consumers faced a notable surge in meat prices, particularly beef and chicken, while the prices of vegetables remained relatively stable.
A survey across various kitchen markets, including Mohakhali, Karwan Bazar, Rampura, Malibagh, and Shanti Nagar, revealed a slight uptick in meat prices compared to the preceding week.
Beef, a staple protein for many households, witnessed an increase of Tk30 per kg, ranging between Tk650 and 800 based on quality. Similarly, mutton and goat meat saw a surge of Tk50 per kg, selling at Tk1050 to 1150 per kg.
The price of broiler chicken climbed to Tk230 to 240 per kg from Tk220 last week, while Sonali chicken prices reached Tk340 to 360 per kg. Other poultry variants such as cock chicken, layer chicken, and indigenous (desi) chicken also experienced price hikes.
Traders attributed the increase in chicken prices to escalations in the costs of chicken feed and broiler chicks.
Conversely, the prices of most vegetables remained steady, with minor fluctuations observed for new vegetables like okra, drumsticks, string beans, and bitter gourd, which edged slightly upwards. Drumsticks, in particular, were priced at Tk140 to 160 per kg based on quality.
Meanwhile, staple vegetables like brinjal, bottle gourds, ash gourds, and cauliflower maintained prices ranging from Tk40 to 60 per piece or per kg.
Other kitchen essentials such as onions, garlic, and ginger showcased consistent pricing patterns, with eggs remaining stable at Tk145 per dozen for brown eggs, Tk70 per hali (four pieces) for egg ducks, and Tk80 per hali for eggs from home-rearing hens.
Despite fluctuations in meat prices, the overall market landscape for kitchen items exhibited stability, providing consumers with a diverse range of options amidst evolving economic conditions. Stay informed as we continue to monitor market trends for you.
