The Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) basketball squad achieved a remarkable feat, clinching the runners-up position in a prestigious basketball tournament held in Nepal. From March 8 to March 12, IUB made its international debut, showcasing its talent against teams from across South Asia.
Comprising Intishar Mostafa Chowdhury, a graduate student from the Department of Media and Communication, along with undergraduates Taifur Uddin, Ahasan Ameer Khan (Department of Computer Science and Engineering), and Mohammed Iftakhar Uddin (Department of Accounting), the IUB team embarked on a journey of success.
Their journey commenced at the Nepal Basketball Association Open 3×3 Tournament, where they emerged victorious against formidable opponents like Timeout A, Shankardev A, and Nagarjuna. The event featured talent from India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Bhutan. Bhim Singh Gurung, president of the Nepal Basketball Association, and Nepali actor Anoop Bikram Shahi commended IUB for their stellar performance.
Building on their success, the IUB team progressed to the Nepal-Bangladesh University Cup 2024, battling it out against five Nepali university teams. Of particular note was their commanding victory over Aims International College with a scoreline of 54-36. The final showdown against Times International College saw a closely contested match culminating in a 56-51 score, securing IUB’s place as the tournament runners-up.
Under the leadership of Coach Shawn Chowdhury and the adept skills of four talented players, the IUB team received valuable guidance from Sadhish Pradhan, captain of Nepal’s National Basketball Team, which significantly enhanced their performance.
IUB extends heartfelt appreciation to the Nepal Basketball Association, Sharad Bista (country coordinator of 3×3), and the Tribhuvan University Authority for their warm hospitality and unwavering support, ensuring a memorable and successful debut for the team in Nepal.
