The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) has greenlit 11 development ventures, with a total estimated cost of Tk 8,425.52 crore. Among the approved projects is one valued at Tk 3,059 crore aimed at constructing 674 Union Parishad complex buildings across 322 upazilas.
Chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Ecnec meeting convened at the NEC conference room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, saw Planning Minister Maj Gen (Retd) Abdus Salam briefing reporters on the decisions made.
Out of the total project cost, Tk 7,939.87 crore will be sourced from the government’s funds, with the remainder, Tk 485.65 crore, sourced from foreign avenues.
Key among the new ventures is the rural infrastructure development in the greater Rangpur region, projected at Tk 2,500 crore, spanning across 35 upazilas in five districts, with an expected completion date of June 2028.
Other noteworthy projects include the construction of the Bangladesh Chancellery Bhaban and Residential Bhaban in Cairo, Egypt, upgrading and widening of the Kashinathpur-Dashuria-Natore-Rajshahi-Nababganj-Kansat-Sonamajjid-Baliadighi Border National Highway, and the development of infrastructures to enhance fish production in existing government fish farms, among others.
Additionally, three revised projects received approval, including the collection of diesel-electric locomotives and passenger carriages for Bangladesh Railways, promoting resilience for the vulnerable through the Provati initiative, and the establishment of full-fledged Cancer, Cardiac, and Kidney Treatment Centers in eight divisional cities.
Furthermore, the meeting gave the green light for the relocation and modernization of the Bangladesh Betar Shahbagh Complex to Agargaon in Dhaka, extending the timeline without additional costs.
