A harrowing incident unfolded in the waters of the Meghna River near Bhairab in Kishoreganj, as a tourist trawler capsized following a collision with a bulkhead, leaving eight individuals missing.
The rescue operation, spearheaded by the fire service diving team, commenced promptly on Saturday at 8 am, with joint efforts from Kishoreganj and Bhairab Fire Service, Bhairab Thana, and Bhairab Naval Police.
According to Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service, Mohammad Enamul Haque, the tragic accident occurred around 6 pm on Friday when the tourist trawler collided with a sand-bearing bulkhead beneath the Syed Nazrul Islam Bridge in Bhairab.
Amidst the chaos, 12 individuals were successfully rescued, but the situation turned grim as Subarna Begum, one of the rescued passengers, succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the Upazila Health Complex.
Among the missing passengers are Bhairav Highway police constable Sohail Rana, accompanied by his wife Moushumi, their children Mahmuda and Raisul, along with Aradhya Dey, Belal Dey, Roopa Dey, and Anika Akhter.
Abdul Alim, the father of the missing policeman, expressed anguish, revealing that his son and family were on a recreational tour at the time of the tragedy.
As the search and rescue efforts intensify, the community remains gripped with apprehension, hoping for the safe return of the missing individuals amidst this tragedy on the Meghna River.
