In a significant development, the pirates who commandeered the Bangladeshi vessel MV Abdullah have made initial contact with the ship’s owners after a span of nine days. Mizanul Islam, a media adviser representing KSRM Group, revealed that the pirates initiated communication without specific demands.
According to Islam, discussions primarily focused on the safety of the crew and the vessel itself, fostering a conducive environment for further negotiations. Assurances were provided regarding the well-being of all 23 crew members, with the promise of no harm inflicted. It was indicated that subsequent contacts would be made by the pirates.
Captain Anam Chowdhury, president of the Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers Association, expressed optimism at this development, viewing it as a positive step towards resolving the situation. He urged for earnest negotiations between the owners, insurers, and the pirates to secure a favorable outcome.
The incident unfolded on March 12 when Somali pirates seized control of MV Abdullah while en route from Mozambique’s Maputo port to Al Hamriyah Port in the UAE. The vessel is under the ownership of SR Shipping Lines, affiliated with Chattogram-based Kabir Steel and Rerolling Mill (KSRM) Group.
