A significant railway incident occurred on Sunday as seven coaches of the Mymensingh-bound Bijoy Express derailed in Comilla’s Nangalkot. The derailment took place at Tejer Bazar area of Dhalua Union around 2 pm, confirmed Nangalkot police station Officer-in-Charge, Debashish Chowdhury.
Reports from locals indicate that approximately 30 individuals sustained injuries in the accident. The train, en route from Chittagong to Jamalpur, suffered the derailment, leading to the suspension of rail connectivity between Dhaka and Chittagong.
Bangladesh Railway General Manager (East), Mohammad Nazmul Islam, stated, “A train derailment occurred about 5 km from Hasanpur, before Nangalkot. While the engine remains on the track, six to seven coaches have derailed. Initial tasks, including dispatching a relief train, are underway.”
Laksam Railway police station Officer-in-Charge, Murad Ullah Bahar, reported, “Train operations on the upline have been halted, but services on the down line continue. Detailed updates will follow after our assessment at the scene.”
Comilla Railway Senior Deputy Assistant Engineer (Road), Liaquat Ali Majumder, announced, “Rail connections from Chittagong to Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Chandpur are suspended. However, operations from Dhaka to Chittagong and other routes remain unaffected.”
The Bijoy Express, departing Chittagong later than scheduled, faced the derailment near Hasanpur station in Nangalkot. The sudden heat is suspected to have played a role in the incident. Rescue efforts are underway, with a train dispatched from Laksham, while services towards Chittagong maintain normalcy.
