Some McDonald’s (MCD.N) stores have returned online following a widespread technology disruption that temporarily halted operations across several countries, including Japan, Australia, and the UK.
“Many markets are now back online, and efforts are underway to restore service in remaining areas. We are collaborating closely with affected markets,” stated McDonald’s Global Chief Information Officer Brian Rice.
The fast-food giant clarified that the outage was not due to a cybersecurity breach but rather stemmed from a third-party provider’s error during a “configuration change.” However, McDonald’s did not disclose the exact number of affected stores.
In Japan, many stores had to suspend in-person and mobile orders due to the system disruption. McDonald’s Holdings Company Japan (2702.T) confirmed ongoing recovery efforts with operations gradually resuming at some locations.
Meanwhile, outlets in Australia, the UK, and Ireland have fully recovered from the outage, according to regional representatives.
With approximately 40,000 outlets worldwide, including over 14,000 in the United States, McDonald’s outage impacted customers in Hong Kong and New Zealand as well, prompting complaints on social media.
This incident follows recent technical difficulties faced by Meta-owned platforms Facebook and Instagram, which experienced global service disruptions for over two hours earlier this month.
