The construction of a border road spanning Rangamati, Khagrachhari, and Bandarban districts promises a significant shift in the landscape of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), opening new avenues for tourism enthusiasts.
Designed not only for enhancing surveillance and curbing cross-border criminal activities but also to provide an exhilarating experience for travelers, the 1,036km road boasts scenic highs and lows, along with challenging twists and turns. The initial stretch covering 371km is slated for inauguration in June, sparking hope for a revitalized tourism sector along its path.
Locals anticipate a ripple effect across various sectors, foreseeing improvements in education, healthcare, security, and information technology alongside an expansion in tourism. Moreover, the road’s strategic location is poised to bolster agricultural and industrial development in the hilly region.
Constructed by the 16th, 20th, and 26th Ad Hoc Engineer Construction Battalions under the 34 Engineer Construction Brigade of the Army Corps of Engineers, the project, overseen by the Roads and Highways Division, spans key regions like Rajasthali, Bilaichhari, Jurachhari, Saichal, Pankatachhara, Majhipara, and Dopanichhara.
With a significant portion already completed, the road’s imminent opening is expected to facilitate trade and commerce with neighboring India, while simultaneously curbing border crimes and trafficking. The initiative, initiated in response to insurgent activities and smuggling along the unguarded border with Myanmar, aims to fortify security measures and enhance connectivity.
Despite the challenges posed by the rugged terrain, including sharp bends and precarious stretches, locals acknowledge the transformative impact on accessibility and communication. However, concerns linger regarding safety, particularly for inexperienced drivers navigating the treacherous path.
As authorities gear up for the road’s inauguration, plans are underway for subsequent phases, underlining the project’s strategic importance and the Bangladesh Army’s relentless efforts to overcome obstacles in its construction. With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina set to inaugurate the first phase, anticipation mounts for the road’s role in reshaping the socio-economic landscape of the CHT.
