A significant development in Bangladesh’s onion market is on the horizon as State Minister for Commerce, Ahsanul Islam Titu, disclosed plans for the importation of 50,000 tons of onions from India.
During his address as the chief guest at an event commemorating World Consumer Rights Day at Dhaka’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium, Minister Titu revealed that the initial shipment of onions is scheduled to arrive from India in the upcoming week. The theme of the event, “Smart Bangladesh Gori, Voktar Sarthey Krittim Buddhimotta Bebohar Kori,” resonated with the minister’s emphasis on bolstering consumer welfare through strategic initiatives.
Asserting the gradual influx of 50,000 tons of onions into the country, Minister Titu called upon business entities and civil society representatives to collaborate in maintaining product prices at reasonable levels.
In a bid to ensure price stability, the government has been diligently enhancing the supply chain, particularly in preparation for Ramadan. Minister Titu highlighted the successful reduction in oil prices and assured the availability of pulses, chickpeas, and sugar in the market.
Moreover, Minister Titu underscored ongoing efforts to fortify the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing, which will play a pivotal role in regulating retail and wholesale prices of essential commodities.
Acknowledging the government’s welfare initiatives, Minister Titu noted that the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) continues to provide subsidized daily essentials to 10 million low-income families nationwide, benefiting approximately 40 million individuals across the country.
Furthermore, Minister Titu lauded the relief provided to consumers by numerous traders and companies selling products at mill-gate prices, thereby alleviating financial burdens.
The event also marked the inauguration of the Supply Chain Monitoring System (SCMS) software by the state minister for commerce, reinforcing the government’s commitment to efficient market management and consumer protection.
