The United Kingdom has pledged an additional £5.2 million (Tk73.2 crore) in humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Announced during the launch of the 2024 humanitarian appeal, the UK’s aid package aims to address the urgent needs of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar.
Implemented by key organizations such as the World Food Program (WFP), International Organization for Migration (IOM), and UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), this funding will provide essential food supplies and cooking gas to Rohingya communities.
Sarah Cooke, the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, emphasized the importance of this support, stating, “I am pleased to announce this new package of £5.2 million to respond to humanitarian needs in the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, and provide vital food and cooking gas to the Rohingya.”
The UK reaffirms its solidarity with Rohingya refugees and the communities in Bangladesh impacted by this ongoing crisis. Recognizing Bangladesh’s significant role in hosting Rohingya refugees, the UK remains committed to finding long-term solutions while continuing to provide essential humanitarian aid.
The newly announced support includes £2.8 million allocated to WFP for food assistance benefiting over 311,600 Rohingya refugees, and £2.4 million to IOM and UNHCR to provide cooking gas to more than 489,800 Rohingya refugees.
Since 2017, the UK has contributed a total of £379 million in humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees and neighboring communities in Bangladesh.
