Brac’s WASH program, in collaboration with IRC Netherlands, is making significant strides in supporting climate-vulnerable communities. In just one year, the program has achieved remarkable milestones, providing clean water and safe sewage facilities to those affected by climate variability.
Funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, the project titled “Equitable and Sustainable Wash Services in Bangladesh Delta Plan Hotspot 2022-2026” aims to safeguard one million people vulnerable to climate change by offering clean water and safe sanitation services.
A recent annual workshop held at the Brac Centre in Dhaka showcased the project’s achievements, challenges, and future plans.
Key highlights from the workshop include providing clean water to over 30,000 individuals between November 2022 and December 2023. Additionally, the project established 1,129 safe water sources and installed 7,830 latrines, benefiting approximately 36,000 people with access to safe sewage facilities, particularly benefiting around 18,000 women.
Operating across barind, coastal, haor, and flood-prone areas, the project strategically addresses climate variability challenges in districts like Khulna, Satkhira, Pirojpur, and more.
Hossain Ishrath Adib, director of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) at Brac, delivered a speech at the workshop, and a panel discussion moderated by SM Monjur Rashid, program head, Advocacy for Social Change, Brac, featured experts from various fields, including Dr. Md Shibly Sadik, senior policy advisor at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Ingeborg Krukkert, innovation lead at IRC.
