In a strategic move to address local demand before Ramadan, the government has given the nod for the import of 39,000 tons of onions from India through the Sonamajsid land port in Chapainawabganj.
Somir Ghosh, deputy director of the Sonamasjid Land Port Plant Quarantine Center, confirmed this development on Tuesday, highlighting that 31 importers at the land port have received approval, and the import process is set to commence prior to Ramadan.
India had imposed export restrictions on onions to Bangladesh and other nations until March 31, 2023, to curb rising prices in the local market. However, recent notifications from the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry, dated March 4, reveal that India has now allowed the export of 64,400 tons of onions to the UAE and Bangladesh through the National Cooperative Exports Ltd. Stay tuned for updates on this strategic import plan.
