Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam have issued a crucial directive to deputy commissioners (DCs) to combat the growing threat of Aedes mosquitoes. This announcement came during the fourth day of the DC conference, which commenced at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital at 9:15 am on Wednesday.
Expressing concerns about the potential increase in Aedes mosquito incidents, Minister Tazul emphasized the need for effective measures, particularly in rural areas. He highlighted the expansion of new buildings and houses in rural regions, coupled with the risk of waterlogging, as potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.
In a virtual meeting before the conference, the minister had already outlined specific instructions for the DCs and divisional commissioners. These instructions aimed at a coordinated effort to address the Aedes mosquito outbreak.
Minister Tazul underscored the significance of public awareness in the fight against Aedes mosquitoes, noting that 90% of the effort required is related to awareness, with the remaining 10% involving technical aspects.
Additionally, he informed that the Dhaka South City Corporation has approved the procurement of medicines worth Tk5 crore in a meeting held on Wednesday. Minister Tazul highlighted the positive trend of decreasing Aedes mosquito prevalence in Dhaka city, which dropped below 20% last year. However, the majority of cases (80%) were reported outside Dhaka.
To reinforce preventive measures, the DCs have been entrusted with initiatives such as distributing leaflets for public awareness and monitoring cleanliness measures. The minister emphasized the importance of timely reporting to the ministry regarding the proper execution of cleanliness initiatives and public awareness efforts in rural areas.
