Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder revealed on Monday that the government is set to distribute 150,000 tons of rice to 5 million families through the Food Friendly Program (FFP) by March 10, in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan.
Speaking to reporters after the DC Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital, Minister Majumder stated that FFP has been directed to complete the distribution process by the specified date.
Responding to queries about the impact on the market, he explained, “If 150,000 tons of rice enters the market at Tk15, then 5 million families won’t have to purchase rice from the market. I believe that is a significant relief.”
In tandem with this initiative, State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu announced that the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will sell six essential food items to 10 million families during Ramadan. Titu has directed deputy commissioners to monitor the goods to ensure proper distribution.
Titu also shared plans for TCB products to be sold through permanent shops from the next year, moving away from trucks. Additionally, before Ramadan, the import of 100,000 metric tons of sugar and 50,00,000 metric tons of onions from India is underway.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to maintain stability, Titu assured, “The price of oil has been reduced by Tk10 to alleviate duty. There is an ample supply of all products ahead of Ramadan, and no prices of any products will be increased.” These comprehensive measures aim to address the needs of the population during the holy month and beyond.
