United Airlines has joined the ranks of carriers raising checked bag fees, following the recent trend in the aviation industry. Effective February 24, United economy passengers booking domestic tickets will see a $5 increase in the fee for the first checked bag, now priced at $40 or $35 if prepaying online at least 24 hours before the flight. The cost for a second checked bag will be $50 at the airport or $45 in advance, reflecting a $5 hike for both options.
This adjustment applies to the majority of flights throughout North America, according to a United spokeswoman. The move comes as airlines navigate challenges in maintaining profitability amid rising costs, including new labor contracts, while facing a changing pricing landscape.
In 2020, United had previously raised the airport fee for a first checked bag by $5 to $35 but maintained a $30 rate for those who paid in advance. Certain exceptions, including credit card holders, elite status frequent flyers, active military personnel, and travelers in top-tier classes, can still enjoy complimentary checked bags, as clarified by United.
This announcement closely follows American Airlines’ decision earlier this week to increase its fee for the first checked bag on domestic flights to $35 if purchased in advance and $40 at the airport. The fee for a second checked bag rose from $40 to $45. JetBlue and Alaska Airlines have also implemented bag fee hikes this year.
The collective impact of these fee adjustments underscores the industry’s effort to strike a balance between growing profits and managing costs in a challenging economic environment. Passengers are advised to stay informed about these changes and consider prepaying to optimize their travel budgets.
