In a significant development, 144 irregular Bangladeshi citizens have been successfully repatriated from Libya, marking a continued effort to bring stranded nationals home. The chartered flight, operated by Buraq Air, arrived early Friday, bringing the total number of returnees to 1,390, as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
These Bangladeshis were located in various places, including detention centers in Tripoli and Benghazi, highlighting the challenges faced by irregular migrants in Libya.
Upon their arrival at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) extended a warm welcome to the repatriated citizens. The IOM provided each individual with pocket money amounting to Tk6000 and essential food items.
Mostofa Jamil Khan, Director (Welfare) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, personally inquired about the well-being of the returnees and encouraged them to share their challenging experiences in Libya with neighbors and relatives. Stressing the importance of creating awareness about illegal migration, he emphasized the crucial role the returnees can play in educating others.
The ongoing process of repatriation is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, and the financial support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This continued initiative aims to bring back Bangladeshi citizens stranded in Libya, ensuring their safe return and offering support for their reintegration into society.
