Dhaka Secures the Third Position on the International Air Quality Index Ranking, Registering a Score of 167 at 10:30 am on Wednesday.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) categorizes Dhaka’s air as unhealthy, signaling significant pollution levels.
Leading the list are Tashkent in Uzbekistan, Lahore in Pakistan, and Delhi in India, with AQI scores of 247, 195, and 166, respectively.
The AQI classifies air quality based on particle pollution, ranging from unhealthy for sensitive groups (101-150) to hazardous (301+), posing severe health risks.
The AQI, a daily air quality reporting index, informs residents about the cleanliness or pollution levels in their city and the potential health effects.
In Bangladesh, the AQI considers five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone.
Dhaka consistently grapples with air pollution, with air quality deteriorating in winter and improving during the monsoon season.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution claims seven million lives globally each year, leading to increased mortality from various respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
