In a significant move to address potential shortages before Ramadan, State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu announced on Sunday that the government is poised to import onions and sugar from India to meet market demands.
Minister Titu revealed that a proposal for the import of 50,000 tons of onions and 100,000 tons of sugar has been submitted to India. While Dhaka has received assurance for 20,000 tons of onions and 50,000 tons of sugar, he expressed optimism about fulfilling the demand as negotiations progress. The Foreign Minister has obtained assurance from India regarding the timely supply of onions and sugar, with promising updates expected by Thursday.
To further secure the availability of essential commodities, the government is exploring additional imports from neighboring countries. A task force committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday will address various aspects, including the potential recalibration of edible oil prices.
Minister Titu emphasized that market monitoring at the field level will be a priority during Ramadan. Following the price adjustment for edible oils, the government is committed to implementing measures to prevent unjustified price hikes, ensuring stability in essential commodity prices during and after Ramadan.
