In a significant development, Chittagong University (CU) has taken prompt action, dismissing Professor Mahbubul Matin from his teaching position following allegations of an attempted rape on a university student. The decision was made during the 548th special syndicate meeting held last night, as revealed by Mohammad Ali, a syndicate member.
The decision to terminate Prof Matin’s tenure came after two investigative committees, assigned to probe the sexual harassment allegations, presented evidence against him. Members of the Syndicate, in light of the findings, recommended the dismissal of Prof Matin from his teaching position at CU.
The incident unfolded when a female student from the Chemistry Department of CU accused Prof Matin of sexual harassment during a thesis session on January 31. Subsequently, the university’s students organized demonstrations and a sit-in program, advocating for the removal of the accused teacher.
The student, who filed the complaint, detailed the alleged incident in a written statement submitted to the university proctor. According to the complaint, Prof Matin, under the guise of academic assistance, took the student to his room and attempted to rape her.
The university’s swift response to the allegations reflects its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students. Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing investigation and its impact on the broader discourse around ensuring the safety and well-being of students within educational institutions.
