Addressing circulating rumors on social media, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has affirmed that there are no immediate plans to increase metro rail fares. Managing Director MAN Siddique emphasized this stance during a press briefing at the Eskaton office in the capital on Thursday.
Siddique stated, “We currently have no intentions to raise or decrease the fare. However, potential considerations for fare adjustments may arise if the National Board of Revenue (NBR) imposes VAT on metro rail or if there is a significant increase in electricity costs.”
The NBR is contemplating the introduction of a 15% value-added tax (VAT) on metro rail tickets in the upcoming fiscal year 2025.
As of now, the metro rail operates from 7 am to 8:40 pm, covering 16 stations from Uttara North to Motijheel. The fare structure includes a minimum of Tk20 for travel between two stations and a maximum of Tk100 for the journey from Uttara to Motijheel.
The potential implementation of the NBR’s VAT plan in the forthcoming budget could contribute to increased government revenue. However, it would also result in higher commuting costs for metro rail passengers.
If a 15% VAT is imposed, calculations suggest that the minimum ticket price for the shortest distance would rise to Tk23 from the current Tk20, while the maximum distance ticket price could increase to Tk115 from Tk100. Stay informed for any updates on fare adjustments in the future.
