A daring anti-drug raid conducted by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel turned violent in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi on Tuesday night, resulting in a RAB constable losing two fingers in the altercation.
The incident involved an attack on three RAB personnel during the operation, with Yunus Ali, a 40-year-old individual accused in a drugs case, being forcibly taken from RAB custody by the attackers.
Constable Imran Hossain, aged 35, who suffered the loss of fingers, also sustained head injuries and has been transferred to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment from Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. The identities of the other two injured RAB members are yet to be confirmed.
According to Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police Shamsul Arefin, local reports indicated that a joint anti-narcotics operation was carried out by RAB-1 and RAB-11 in Sonakandi village of Nilakhya union around 8:30 pm. During the operation, Yunus Ali, a suspected drug dealer, was apprehended by the RAB team. However, in a swift and violent turn of events, relatives and associates of Yunus Ali attacked the RAB members, successfully snatching him away.
The Additional SP revealed that three individuals, including Constable Imran, sustained severe injuries during the assault.
The incident underscores the risks faced by law enforcement personnel during anti-drug operations, with escalating tensions and violence posing significant challenges to maintaining law and order.
