In a significant move, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasized the need for proactive measures on geographical indication (GI) certificates for Bangladesh’s products during a Cabinet meeting on Sunday at her office in Dhaka.
Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain highlighted the discussion on GI products during a press briefing at the Bangladesh Secretariat, stating, “The prime minister urged all to be active and take initiatives regarding our products’ GI certification.”
During the meeting, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun presented GI certificates for the Tangail sari, Narsingdi’s Amritasagar Banana, and Gopalganj’s rosogolla to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In addition to addressing the GI certification issue, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also unveiled the cover of the poetry book “Pitaroe Proticchobi” (Reflection of Father) authored by Science and Technology Minister Yeafesh Osman.
The spotlight on GI certification gained prominence after the Indian government granted GI recognition to the Tangail sari, asserting that these products originated from West Bengal. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directive underscores the importance of safeguarding the authenticity and recognition of Bangladesh’s unique products on the global stage.
