Rangpur division finds itself in the grip of yet another mild cold wave as the Bangla month Magh concludes, witnessing the mercury plunge to 8°C in Tetulia on Friday. The entire region is shrouded in dense fog for the past two days, signaling the onset of the cold spell.
According to the Rangpur Meteorological Office, temperatures measured 8.8°C in Dinajpur, 9°C in Rajarhat of Kurigram, 10°C in Syedpur of Nilphamari, 10.4°C in Dimla of Nilphamari, and 11.3°C in Rangpur.
Mostafizur Rahman, Assistant Meteorologist at the Rangpur Met Office, indicated a potential further drop in temperatures, particularly in Dinajpur and Tetulia. While other districts may not experience a significant temperature decline, the prevailing weather conditions are anticipated to persist for at least another week.
The harsh cold wave is taking a toll on the vulnerable populations in the district, with many resorting to burning straws for warmth during the night. The impact is especially pronounced on individuals with low incomes, struggling to venture outside for work in the challenging weather conditions.
The severe cold is also impacting children in the division, leading to an increase in colds, diarrhea, pneumonia, and respiratory problems. Dr. Yunus Ali, Director of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, highlighted the strain on the healthcare system, with wards designated for children (wards no. 9 and 10) reaching full capacity. Shortages of beds have forced patients to receive care on the floors.
Outside the hospital, hundreds of children and their mothers queue up daily for treatment, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the healthcare needs arising from the cold weather. Dr. Yunus Ali advised children to limit outdoor activities unless necessary during the morning and evening to mitigate health risks associated with the severe cold.
