Myanmar has initiated discussions to repatriate its Army, Border Guard Police (BGP), Police, and Immigration personnel, who sought refuge in Bangladesh, using a navy ship. This repatriation process is set to commence in the coming days.
The decision emerged during a crucial inter-ministerial meeting led by Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Wednesday, as confirmed by multiple sources to Prothom Alo. The topic was also addressed during talks between Bangladesh’s ambassador and Myanmar’s foreign minister in Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s administrative capital.
The meeting, attended by senior officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs, government intelligence agencies, and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Myanmar Monwar Hossain, explored various repatriation options. While Bangladesh proposed air travel for the return of Myanmar nationals, Myanmar expressed a preference for repatriation by sea, involving Myanmar Navy ships entering Bangladesh waters.
A senior official clarified that the repatriation process through the Bay of Bengal would adhere to international regulations, ensuring a smooth and compliant procedure. The expected repatriation of 328 Myanmar citizens is anticipated to occur soon.
Foreign Secretary Masud bin Momen, addressing reporters post-meeting, highlighted the primary agenda of repatriating the 328 Myanmar citizens. The recent influx of 64 Myanmar border guards into Bangladesh, prompted by insurgent attacks, raised concerns. The foreign secretary assured that safety and expediency were paramount considerations in determining the repatriation method.
When questioned about potential risks for Bangladesh amid the Rakhine situation, the foreign secretary downplayed direct threats, emphasizing the Border Guard Bangladesh’s (BGB) preparedness for security. Myanmar has been urged to prevent the Rakhine conflict from impacting Bangladesh while expediting the repatriation of those seeking refuge.
Bangladesh Ambassador Monwar Hossain, in a courtesy visit to Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Than Swe, urged proactive measures to avert instability in Rakhine and emphasized the importance of Rohingya repatriation for bilateral relations.
Ambassador Hossain noted Myanmar’s commitment to addressing concerns raised by Bangladesh, demonstrating a willingness to take necessary steps. The evolving situation underscores the diplomatic efforts to ensure stability and security in the region.
