Amidst the ongoing conflict between the Myanmar army and the rebel Arakan Army at the border, a significant number of Myanmar’s border and security forces, totaling 264 members, have sought refuge in Bangladesh, as reported by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The newly appointed BGB Director General, Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, disclosed that the migration of these individuals began with 115 crossing the border by the end of the previous night. This morning, an additional 114 arrived, and by the afternoon, 35 more joined them, bringing the total count to 264.
The shelter seekers comprise members from various sectors, including immigration, Myanmar police, and other agencies. According to Shariful Islam, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Border Guard Bangladesh, the BGB disarmed the individuals upon arrival and ensured their safe relocation to a secure shelter.
The conflict in Myanmar has resulted in collateral damage, with a tragic incident reported yesterday where a Bangladeshi woman and a Rohingya man lost their lives due to a mortar shell fired from Myanmar, exploding in Bandarban’s Ghumdhum union.
The escalating violence has left several thousand Bangladeshis in border areas feeling insecure, as bullets and mortar shells from Myanmar have landed in Bangladesh over the past two days. The situation remains tense as the BGB continues its efforts to manage the influx of individuals seeking safety from the conflict-ridden region.
