Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited have announced a revision in the monthly charge for prepaid meters, increasing it to Tk200 starting January. This adjustment is aimed at covering the expenses associated with running and maintaining the meters.
Previously set at Tk100, the new decision has sparked confusion among valued customers, prompting Titas to issue a clarification. According to the company’s statement on Monday, the cost of each prepaid meter, considering its 10-year lifespan and including installation, web system, and server maintenance charges, totals around Tk25,000.
Highlighting the need for loans to acquire all meters, Titas emphasized the introduction of monthly charges as a more consumer-friendly approach, easing the financial burden on customers compared to paying the total meter cost upfront.
Despite the government fixing the residential gas price at Tk18 per cubic meter for consumer convenience, Titas noted that the combined price of domestically produced gas and imported LNG in 2023 exceeded this average. The company explained that subsidies from the government against every cubic meter of gas in the residential sector are necessary, and the rise in gas prices is deemed irrelevant.
This adjustment in prepaid meter charges aligns with Titas Gas’s strategy to streamline service operations and ensure sustainability in the face of rising operational costs.
