Commencing Monday, the Airport Road in Dhaka is anticipated to experience heightened traffic congestion due to the initiation of construction work on the country’s inaugural underground metro rail project.
The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL) revealed in a circular on Sunday that utility lines will be relocated from the airport to the Khilkhet area to facilitate the construction of the Mass Rapid Transit Line-1 (MRT Line-1), potentially causing traffic disruptions on the road.
“The transfer of utility lines will commence from 10 pm on Monday in the vicinity of the proposed Underground Metrorail MRT Line-1 project at Airport, Airport Terminal-3, and Khilkhet stations,” stated the circular.
DMTCL has urged commuters to plan their journeys accordingly, acknowledging the expected challenges posed by the construction activities.
The construction of the country’s first-ever underground metro rail was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on February 2, 2023. MRT Line-1 marks a significant milestone as the country’s maiden underground metro rail line, covering a total distance of 31.24km with both underground and elevated sections. The 19.87km underground route extends from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Kamalapur, while approximately 11.36km will be elevated from Natun Bazar to Purbachal.
