In the wake of accusations by Israel that several UNRWA staff were involved in a Hamas attack on October 7, key donor nations are halting their funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Following the lead of the U.S., which suspended payments on Friday, several countries, including Australia, Italy, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the UK, are temporarily pausing disbursements pending investigations.
The U.S. State Department emphasized the critical role UNRWA plays in providing essential aid to Palestinians. An investigation into Israel’s allegations has been initiated, with 12 UNRWA employees accused of participating in the Hamas attack.
UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini expressed concern over the suspension of funding, stating it jeopardizes ongoing humanitarian work, especially in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, Canada has also temporarily paused additional funding for UNRWA, pending a thorough investigation into the allegations.
In response to Israel’s claims, UNRWA has terminated contracts and vowed to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Germany, Australia, Finland, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the UK have all issued statements outlining their suspension of funding and the need for independent investigations to ensure funds do not support terrorist activities.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has been briefed on the situation and is committed to an urgent and comprehensive independent review of UNRWA. The global community awaits the results of these investigations to determine the future of funding for the humanitarian agency.
