A devastating incident unfolded on Wednesday morning as the anchored ferry “Rajanigandha” with vehicles on its deck sank in the Padma River near Paturia’s ghat no. 5. The ferry, which usually operates on the Paturia-Daulatdia route, was moored due to dense fog. Manikganj Deputy Commissioner Rehana Akter reported that 10 individuals have been rescued, with four swimming ashore and six being rescued by the fire service. Shah Mohammad Khaled Newaz, Deputy Managing Director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority’s (BIWTA) Aricha office, revealed that ferry operations on the Paturia-Daulatdia route were halted at 2:30 am due to the fog, and the Rajanigandha ferry remained anchored during the incident. Tragically, there were nine vehicles on the deck, and the second machine operator, Humayun Kabir, is currently missing. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
