Ganatantra Mancha, a coalition of six political factions backing the BNP’s cause, has labeled the January 7th elections as deceptive and lacking credibility. Advocating for a fresh election conducted under a neutral caretaker government, the alliance reiterated its stance during a gathering at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
The alliance’s stance gained momentum against the backdrop of persistent dissent by the BNP and affiliated parties, which refrained from participating in the January 7 polls. The Awami League clinched victory in the contested elections, solidifying its fourth consecutive term and subsequently forming the government.
At the forefront of the rally was Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Mannan, accompanied by prominent figures such as Saiful Huq of the Revolutionary Workers Party and Zonayed Saki of Ganosamhati Andolan. The assembly, moderated by Shahidullah Kaisar of Nagorik Oikya, underscored the widespread belief that both the electorate and the international democratic community had rejected the election’s legitimacy.
Leaders emphasized that the swift oath-taking by elected MPs failed to reflect genuine democratic values, asserting that the boycott by the people epitomized a collective call for democracy, human rights, and justice.
Highlighting their resolve, one spokesperson stated, “Our resistance against the incumbent government will intensify, fueled by the public’s rejection of the recent election.”
The coalition further demanded the dissolution of the 12th parliament, advocating for a comprehensive dialogue involving all political entities to pave the way for a transparent electoral process.
The controversial January 7th polls witnessed participation from 26 out of 44 registered political parties, recording a turnout of 41.8%. While the election faced scrutiny from major Western nations citing irregularities such as violence and electoral malpractices, over 30 countries, including India, China, Russia, Japan, and Germany, extended their congratulations to the newly formed government.
