After a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Japan’s west coast on January 1, the death toll has now surpassed 100, with hundreds still missing.
Rescue teams and residents continue to search through debris for bodies, but hopes of finding survivors have dwindled. This earthquake is Japan’s deadliest in nearly eight years, causing extensive destruction and leaving 23,000 homes without power in the Hokuriku region.
As of Saturday, authorities reported over 200 people still missing. Sixteen additional deaths were confirmed in Wajima city and Anamizu town, bringing the total death toll to 110. Wajima city recorded the highest number of deaths at 59, followed by Suzu with 23.
The disaster has resulted in over 500 injuries, with at least 27 of them classified as serious.
