The City Council of Porto Alegre in Brazil unanimously approved a recent bill concerning water meters, and what makes it unique is that it was entirely authored by ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) language model. Councilman Ramiro Rosario, who sponsored the bill, explained that it didn’t result from traditional policy debates but was created through ChatGPT.
Effective November 23, the bill’s objective is to prevent the Municipal Water and Sewage Department from charging property owners for new water meters in cases of theft. Rosario highlighted the efficiency of AI by mentioning that entering a 250-character command into ChatGPT took approximately 15 seconds, a task that would typically occupy three days of his time.
He underscored the practicality of using AI as a tool to enhance public services. The AI-generated suggestions included a 30-day deadline for replacing stolen water meters and a provision to waive water bills if not met, addressing an ongoing issue for the city’s residents.
