The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has released directives advising citizens against organizing New Year’s Eve celebrations in open areas, emphasizing security concerns and maintaining law and order.
In an effort to ensure safety, the DMP has imposed restrictions on gatherings, festivals, and public events across the capital’s roads, flyovers, intersections, and public spaces. Citizens are urged not to ignite fireworks, firecrackers, or release sky lanterns during the English New Year festivities.
Furthermore, the sale and purchase of fireworks, crackers, and sky lanterns are strictly banned throughout Dhaka, as confirmed by the DMP. A press release from Commissioner Habibur Rahman highlights the prohibition of any form of gathering, including dances, songs, or cultural events, in open areas.
For enhanced security measures, access restrictions will be imposed around Dhaka University from the evening of December 31. Only vehicles displaying Dhaka University stickers will gain entry, and residents, teachers, students, and staff are required to return to their respective areas by 8pm. Those entering post this time must present identification to on-duty officers.
Similarly, after 8pm, outsiders are prohibited from entering areas like Gulshan, Banani, and Baridhara. However, residents can access these zones via specified routes, subject to verification. Visitors are advised to avoid these areas during the specified hours to bolster security.
Additionally, gatherings in the Hatirjheel area are restricted post 6pm, with stringent regulations against vehicle parking or stopping to ensure orderliness. All bars within Dhaka must cease operations by 6pm on December 31, though residential hotels can host limited events under their management.
Lastly, to uphold a secure ambiance, the use of licensed firearms is prohibited in residential hotels, restaurants, public gatherings, and festivals from 6pm on December 31 until 5am on January 1.
