Amidst Israel’s intensified offensive in central Gaza, an overwhelming influx of Palestinians, estimated in the tens of thousands, has poured into Rafah, the southernmost town of the strip, as reported by the United Nations. This migration comes as the heart of the Gaza Strip faces devastating airstrikes and artillery attacks, resulting in numerous casualties, including a significant number of civilians.
With Israel’s relentless campaign against Hamas, an estimated 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants find themselves displaced. While Israeli military designates certain areas as safe zones, these regions have also come under bombardment, instilling a profound sense of insecurity among the Palestinian population.
The scenario in Rafah is dire. The town, already grappling with its own challenges, now finds its population swelling to nearly 850,000 individuals, a figure that is more than triple its usual inhabitants, according to U.N. statistics. Infrastructure strains are evident, with makeshift shelters cropping up in every available space, including roadsides slick with mud from seasonal rains.
Juliette Touma of UNRWA highlighted the dire conditions, noting makeshift shelters and families sleeping in their vehicles or out in the open. As Israel’s focus intensifies on urban refugee hubs like Bureij, Nuseirat, and Maghazi, reports emerge of leveled structures and escalating conflicts.
The toll of this conflict is staggering. The Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory reported a death toll surpassing 21,500, predominantly women and children, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian crisis. While international appeals for a cease-fire mount, Israeli officials remain steadfast, targeting the dismantling of Hamas and securing the release of over 100 hostages from previous militant actions.
Meanwhile, Rafah’s infrastructure crumbles. Reports indicate the breakdown of water and sanitation systems, leading to rampant illnesses among the overcrowded inhabitants. Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, emphasized the urgent need for increased aid delivery, citing significant bureaucratic impediments and constant disruptions due to ongoing hostilities.
Recent strikes in central Gaza, particularly in Nuseirat and Maghazi, have intensified, causing widespread devastation. Israel attributes the high civilian casualties to Hamas’s alleged use of civilian infrastructure for military purposes. Amidst this backdrop, international scrutiny grows, especially concerning Israel’s actions and the escalating humanitarian crisis engulfing Gaza.
