In a significant development, reports from Iranian media indicate that a high-ranking official from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) lost his life in what’s believed to be an Israeli airstrike in Damascus.
According to the official IRNA news agency, Razi Mousavi was targeted in the Zeinabiyah district, south of Damascus, known locally as Sayeda Zeinab or Sitt Zaynab. Described as one of the IRGC’s most seasoned advisors in Syria, Mousavi had close ties to the late Qassem Soleimani, the former head of the IRGC Quds force, who met his demise in a U.S. drone strike in January 2020 in Baghdad.
Tasnim, a semi-official Iranian news agency, highlighted Mousavi’s pivotal role in orchestrating a military partnership between Iran and Syria. Additionally, he was instrumental in Tehran’s endeavors to arm and support regional proxies, notably Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
As of now, Syrian pro-government media outlets have not provided further details regarding this airstrike.
