Authorities reported a fire outbreak on the Sevmorput, Russia’s nuclear-powered cargo ship, ensuring the situation was swiftly brought under control on Monday.
The Emergency Situations Ministry of Russia confirmed its rapid response, dispatching teams to Atomflot’s base near Murmansk following the incident late Sunday. As per the ministry’s social media update, the fire encompassed an area of approximately 30 square meters within one of Sevmorput’s cabins. Fortunately, the prompt actions led to the fire’s speedy containment without any reported casualties.
While details regarding the fire’s origin or its proximity to the ship’s reactor remain undisclosed, Atomflot, an entity under the state-owned nuclear giant Rosatom, reassured the public. In a statement to the state-affiliated TASS news agency, Atomflot affirmed that both the vessel’s reactor unit and essential life support systems remained unaffected.
Having been operational since 1988, Sevmorput stands as one of the quartet of nuclear-powered merchant ships in Russia’s fleet.
