The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has unveiled that Sultan Salauddin Tuku, the detained Jubo Dal President, masterminded the Gazipur train derailment. This revelation was made public by Additional Commissioner of DMP and CTTC head, Md Asaduzzaman, during a press conference at DMP Media Centre.
As per Asaduzzaman’s briefing, Ikhtiyar Rahman Kabir, a former Chhatra Dal vice-president and existing Jubo Dal leader aged 43, executed Tuku’s directives. Tuku allegedly aimed to instigate widespread panic by disrupting the Joydebpur railway track, with intentions of causing significant casualties, as conveyed by CTTC.
Highlighting the motive behind this nefarious plot, Asaduzzaman mentioned, “While the city witnessed multiple incidents of unrest, the railway remained a symbol of secure transportation. This plot was designed to destabilize this trust.” He further detailed Kabir’s coordination with Gazipur’s Chhatra Dal unit leaders, Toha and Masum, emphasizing their role in strategizing the sabotage.
The CTTC chief further elaborated on the group’s failed attempts to tamper with the railway infrastructure, eventually resorting to cutting the track. Essential tools for this sabotage, sourced from Old Dhaka’s Nawabpur, were stored at Emon Hossain’s residence in Lalbagh.
By December 13, the group, consisting of nine individuals, commenced their disruptive activities on the railway line. The aftermath of their actions resulted in the tragic death of Aslam Mia, a 35-year-old poultry trader, and left ten others injured, including the train’s operational crew.
In a subsequent operation, CTTC confiscated tools and equipment from the apprehended individuals. Authorities had previously detained several suspects in connection with this incident, reflecting the extensive investigative efforts into the matter.
