After a challenging week marked by a bird strike incident in England, a Boeing AJS-787 Dreamliner from Biman Bangladesh Airlines is scheduled to touch down in Dhaka this Sunday.
The aircraft, with a passenger count of 250, encountered mechanical issues post its bird strike mishap, marking a significant event as Biman Bangladesh Airlines experiences its maiden bird strike incident overseas.
The untoward incident transpired during the plane’s landing phase at Manchester Airport, though Biman Bangladesh Airlines reassured the public of all passengers’ safety.
Initially, the flight took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on December 17, aiming for a 7:30 pm Manchester Airport arrival. Subsequent plans were in place for a 9 pm departure from Manchester to Dhaka. However, due to engine damage from the bird strike, passengers found temporary lodging at Clayton Hotel Manchester Airport, with Biman incurring daily expenses of £200 per passenger.
To expedite the resolution, Biman dispatched engineers via flight BG207 from Dhaka to Manchester, reaching the destination on Friday. The same aircraft, BG207, facilitated the return journey for all affected passengers to Dhaka.
Post-incident, Biman Bangladesh Airlines engaged in negotiations with Boeing and the engine manufacturer, seeking authorization for the impaired flight’s journey back to Dhaka. A Biman official shared with Dhaka Tribune about the unforeseen challenges, stating, “Given the severity of the damage, Boeing initially withheld clearance. However, repair assurances were provided, targeting an aircraft operability by Friday evening.”
Highlighting the technical nuances, Air Commodore Md Moazzem Hossain, Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ Director of Engineering and Material Management, shed light on the extent of damage and the proactive measures taken for restoration.
Despite the ordeal, passengers conveyed appreciation for Biman’s prompt support, ensuring safety and timely provisions during the unexpected delay. Notably, Biman Bangladesh Airlines continues its weekly flight operations to Manchester every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.
