Dhaka witnessed significant activity on Sunday morning as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its associated factions orchestrated protest marches across various city sectors, amplifying their ongoing blockade and non-cooperation movement.
Voicing their demands loud and clear, participants called for the government’s resignation, elections under an impartial caretaker body, and the immediate release of detained figures, notably BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
In the heart of Dhanmondi, the Swechchhasebak Dal spearheaded a procession in solidarity with the blockade, with notable figures like Senior Vice-President Yasin Ali and Organizing Secretary Nazmul Hasan leading the charge. During this demonstration, attempts to obstruct roads were observed.
Elsewhere, Dhaka district’s BNP President, Khandaker Abu Ashfaq, led another rally on the Dhaka-Aricha highway. However, the event concluded with police intervention, resulting in the apprehension of several participants.
Further emphasizing their stance, Jubo Dal members embarked on a procession stretching from Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar to Notre Dame College Road, aiming to bolster the blockade’s effectiveness. Key figures like Jubo Dal Joint Secretary Billal Hossain Tarek and Assistant General Secretary Shah Nasiruddin Rumon were pivotal in this morning’s rally.
Additionally, numerous rallies were organized across Dhaka under the guidance of Dhaka Metropolitan West Chhatra Dal President Abul Kalam Azad Nasir.
Notably, this marks the 12th blockade orchestrated by opposition factions since October 31, with the latest move coming on the heels of BNP’s declaration of non-cooperation against the ruling government on December 20.
Despite the heightened tensions and potential security concerns, Dhaka’s streets showcased a semblance of regularity, with public transport and commuters maintaining their usual routines amidst the blockade.
